Anyone who has acquired a driving license outside the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) can only drive in Germany for a limited period of time. The foreign driving license must be converted into a German driving license no later than six months after the official registration of residence in Germany.

If this period is exceeded, the foreign driving license loses its validity in Germany. This means that you are no longer legally entitled to drive here with this document. If you wish to continue driving a vehicle in Germany after this six-month period has expired, a transfer is mandatory.

Registration at our driving school

  • Make an appointment for a personal consultation or register directly with us.
  • If examinations are necessary, we will draw up an individual learning plan and schedule together.
  • We will help you to compile all the necessary documents.

Evidence & preparations

  • You can take an eye test, first aid course and biometric passport photos directly at our driving school.
  • You can find all the dates in our calendar - simply book the date that suits you.
  • If your driver's license is not in German, you will also need an official translation from a recognized agency.

Application at the driving license office

  • Once all the documents are complete, you can submit the application to the appropriate authority.
  • The authority then checks your documents and decides whether a theoretical and/or practical test is required.

  • If a theoretical exam is required, you can prepare for it using our modern learning platform.
  • If you have to take a practical test, we will support you with individual driving lessons so that you can drive safely in accordance with German traffic regulations.
  • After successful preparation, we will register you for the exam.

Procedure of the tests (if necessary)

  • You take the theoretical test at the TÜV - in different languages if required.
  • The practical test takes place together with one of our driving instructors and a TÜV examiner.

Issue of your new driving license

  • Once you have passed the test or your application has been successfully processed, you will usually receive your new German driving license straight away.
  • A separate collection from the driving license office is not normally necessary.
  • Only in exceptional cases may it be necessary to collect your driver's license in person from the relevant driving license office at Berlin Steglitz.
  • Your original foreign driver's license will usually be confiscated or marked accordingly.

A probationary period is only set if your foreign driving license is less than two years old at the time of transfer. The date of issue of the foreign driving license is decisive here – not the date of the German document.

No, not in every case. Whether you have to take a theoretical and/or practical test depends on the country in which you obtained your driving license.

For many non-EU countries that are in the

Annex 11 FeV (so-called list of states)

special regulations apply. Depending on the country of origin, it may be that no test, only a practical test or both tests are required.

After registering your residence in Germany, your foreign driving license from a third country remains valid for 6 months. After that, it will no longer be recognized and you will need a German driving license.

If you can prove that you will not be staying in Germany for longer than 12 months in total, you can extend the period once for a further 6 months. Proof must be submitted to the competent authority.
